IRS Data Retrieval
For Smarter, Faster, Better Financial Aid
The SCC Financial Aid Office strongly encourages you to utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your tax information from the IRS to your FAFSA as you complete your FAFSA online.
Advantages
By using the IRS Data Retrieval option, you significantly lower the chances of being selected for the verification process, which will save you time and expedite the financial aid process.
If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you used the IRS Data Retrieval option, you will not be required to submit any tax return documentation to the Financial Aid Office.
Obtaining a tax return transcript and/or wage and income transcript from the IRS
If your FAFSA is selected for the verification process and you chose not to use the IRS Data Retrieval option (or could not use it), you will be required to obtain a tax return transcript (and in some cases a wage and income transcript), from the IRS. Personal copies of tax returns and W2(s) can no longer be accepted.
If a tax return was not filed: how to obtain a verification of non-filing letter from the IRS
If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you and/or your spouse (if married) or parents (if dependent), did not and was/were not required to file a federal tax return, you will be required to obtain a verification of non-filing letter from the IRS. For this, you will need to submit a Form 4506T to the IRS. If no tax return is found, the IRS will send you a verification of non-filing letter. You must submit that letter to the Financial Aid Office. Download IRS Form 4506T (PDF)
For a listing of items needed to complete your financial aid file, go through your MySCC Portal to WebAdvisor under Financial Aid then select My Documents. Forms are available there or on this website.
Please Note: The Financial Aid Office will not accept a tax return transcript, wage and income transcript, or a verification of non-filing letter faxed or emailed from the IRS.
